 | CHALLENGE PROGRAM: TEST DRIVE THE BROTHERS' LIFE - VOLUNTEER FOR 2 WEEKS IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA
The De La Salle Brothers are inviting young men (20 - 35 years) to 'test drive the Brother's life' by signing up for a two week Challenge Program to Papua New Guinea in November 2010.
The program will give participants a great opportunity to live and work with the Brothers and engage in high impact work with youth in need at the Hohola Youth Development Centre, located about 30km from Port Moresby, and Mainohana Catholic Secondary School, located in the highlands of PNG.
In Papua New Guinea at just 13 years of age, half of all students across the country are forced to abandon their education. For these young people with limited skills and little hope for a positive future, the denial of further education comes down to two issues: either they have not gained entry into the limited government funded schools that are available or families simply cannot afford the schools fees.
In Hohola the Brothers run a youth development centre to give young people a chance to gain an education or learn skills which will give youth a chance to gain and maintain employment. In Mainohana, the Brothers run a secondary school and provide better living conditions than what the children would receive if they were at home.
This program offers volunteers an incredible opportunity to learn about the mission and spirituality of the De La Salle Brothers and to experience the challenges and diversity of life in Papua New Guinea.
Broaden your understanding of the Brothers' life and work while learning about and appreciating the unique history and culture of Papua New Guinea.
Date: 28 November - 8 December 2010 Cost: Travel, insurance and personal expenses (meals and accommodation are provided). Applications close: 24 September 2010
